Medicare Drug Plan

How Do You Join a Medicare Drug Plan

Medicare drug coverage offers to pay for all the prescription drugs you need to better your health. Hence, you should consider opting for Medicare prescription drug coverage if you have not yet given it a thought. It does not matter even if you are someone who doesn’t take prescription drugs now, having Medicare drug coverage is a smart move.

To secure Medicare prescription drug coverage, you are required to join a plan that is approved by Medicare offering drug coverage. It is important to note that the cost of each plan varies in cost and covers only a specific range of drugs.

There are two ways to get this coverage:

Standalone Part D Plans

Such plans add drug coverage to some Private-Fee-for-Service Plans, Original Medicare, in addition to some Medicare Cost Plans as well as Medical Savings Account Plans. To join a Medicare drug plan separately, it is necessary to have Original Medicare.

Medicare Advantage Plans

Through these plans, it is possible to secure Part A, Part B, and prescription drug coverage. However, keep in mind that not all Medicare Advantage Plans provide prescription drug coverage, so you should always review the plan before opting for it.

Take note that to join a Medicare Advantage Plan, you must also be enrolled in Original Medicare.

Deciding on a Plan

Once you have chosen a Medicare drug plan, you can obtain prescription coverage by:

  • Enrolling on the plan’s website or through the Medicare Plan Finder.
  • Filling out a paper enrollment form.
  • Call the plan, or call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227.

Once you join the plan, you will be required to give your Medicare Number alongside the date when your Part A and Part B coverage began. All this information can be found on your Medicare card.

If you happen to be eligible or already enrolled in a drug coverage plan, we suggest you thoroughly go through all the materials your insurer or plan provider gives you. It is important that you are fully knowledgeable about each plan before making any changes to your current coverage.
