Medicare Advantage plans are another way to get your Original Medicare coverage. Also called Medicare Part C or MA Plans, Medicare Advantage plans are offered by Medicare-approved private insurance companies that are required to follow Medicare’s rules. You’ll get bundled coverage and often more coverage than just Original Medicare.
Usually, you’ll need to use health care providers who are in-network for your plan and service area. These plans typically set a limit on your out-of-pocket costs each year for covered services, offering more financial protection.
Following are the different types of Medicare Advantage plans:
- Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Plans
- Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans
- Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans
- Special Needs Plans (SNPs)
- Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plans
HMO and PPO plans are the most popular Medicare Advantage plans.
Does Medicare Advantage Cover Prescription Drugs?
In most cases, Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans offer prescription drug coverage. All Special Needs Plans (SNPs) are required to provide Medicare prescription drug coverage.
If you want Medicare drug coverage, make sure to research your plan and join one that has it.
How To Get Prescription Drug Coverage
Most Medicare Advantage plans do provide Medicare Part D, prescription drug coverage. If you have a certain type of Medicare Advantage plan (a plan that can’t offer drug coverage like a Medical Savings Account plan or chooses not to offer drug coverage like some Private Fee-for-Service plans), you might be able to join a Medicare Part D plan separately. Just always make sure you check with your plan before you make any coverage changes.
However, if your Medicare Advantage plan already offers prescription drug coverage, you cannot enroll in a separate Part D plan.
